MOM ALERT!….. THINGS YOUR TEENS CAN DO THIS SUMMER……

Raleigh lines up camps for teens, includes campus tours, community service

By

I often get emails from parents looking for summer activities and camps for their teens around this time of year.

Daniel Price, teen program director for Raleigh parks, sent these over the other day. Here’s what they have lined up:

  • Campus Crusin’, July 15 to July 19, at Kiwanis Park. A self-exploration program designed to assist students in gaining a greater awareness of institutions of higher education in North Carolina. Personal interest surveys, enhancing your resume, and campus tours to many of North Carolina’s private and public universities are coupled with new friendships and a college atmosphere. This is a great chance for students to find a school that will prepare them for their future career! Campus tours include NC State, ECU, UNC, Elon, Barton College, Wake Tech, NC Central, UNC-W, UNC-G, and Duke. For ages 14 to 17. Fee: $150.

YOUR HANDBAG = GERMS!!!!!!!!

Handbags may contain more germs than average toilet flush

Washing your hands after using the bathroom might be a common practice to stop the spread of germs, but not many women may wash their hands after they put them in their purse. But, according to a study conducted by the company Initial Washroom Hygiene, perhaps they should.

Researchers with the hygiene and washroom services company swabbed handbags to find the dirtiest parts. Twenty percent of handbags swabbed had levels of bacteria-related contamination which could potentially cross-contaminate other surfaces — and contained more germs than the average toilet flush, CBS New York reported.

THE CROSSINGS LOVE OUR PETS!!!!!!…

Pets are great for (your) heart health

By Kim Fernandez,

Love your pet with all your heart? It may not be just an emotional thing. Researchers said recently that having a pet may help reduce heart disease in humans.
The American Heart Association released a study that said pet ownership, especially dog ownership, is associated with a decreased risk of heart disease and increased survival among patients. Why is dog ownership more beneficial? Experts said it’s probably because owning a pooch provides cardiovascular benefits — all those walks and games of fetch add up! Dog owners, they said, engage in more walking and physical activity than other people, and are 54 percent more likely to get the recommended amount of physical activity than their non-dog-owning counterparts

GOT KIDS????…Here are some kid friendly things to do this summer….

Marbles news: Around Town closed, new summer hours, kindergarten kickoff for year-round students

So here’s the word from Marbles Kids Museum as we head into the very busy summer season:

The downtown Raleigh destination will have special family play hours on Mondays this summer. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to noon for family play only. No field trips will be allowed that day. Marbles is usually closed on Mondays. Its regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. It’s open late on First Fridays and third Tuesdays.

Marbles can be packed with field trips and summer camps. I know this will be a welcome change for a lot of families. The Monday hours start on June 3.
